  • Fort Ross is a California state park. Fort Ross was never a military post. It was built by Russian fur trappers who were there for the sea otter pelts that were made into hats and clothing, mostly for China. Built on the rugged Pacific Coast, Fort Ross is between San Francisco and Mendocino California on Highway 1.
